Visual arts has the ability to express one self in a way that connects to the viewer without having to produce audible sound, yet still communicating with the viewer. Being able to articulate what exactly you are doing when you are visually expressing yourself when capturing an image, gives you the opportunity to fully surrender yourself and to be completely honest with who you are as a person.
In the beginning of this process, I found myself starting to look at everyday objects in a different perspective. A tree wasn’t just a tree anymore, it took on a new entity. It displayed movement in the branches, texture in the bark of the tree, negative and positive spaces between the tree branches and sky, and representationally it signified growth. I began this course with an interest in nature; trees, stumps, water and leaves. What I came to realize was that even though I love being outdoors and surrounded by nature, I felt like it was taking away from living in the moment. I wanted to embrace the stillness and appreciate it, opposed to capturing it.
I wanted to signify an expression of who I am as a person, and what makes my soul happy. I wanted the viewer to know who I am and the type of person that I am through the lighting, perspective and subject matter. I took my camera with me everywhere on my day to day routine. I started to capture paintbrushes in the classroom, skull art projects, my loved ones and I tried to manipulate the perspective of these objects. I found myself creating reflections, cropping, worms eye view, birds eye view and keeping in mind depth of field. This is how I want to portray myself as an artist surrounded by aspects of my life that have meaning and value to me
